3 or more ounces of wet oatmeal teeming with live Microworms. Ready to use or to start your own culture.

Microworms are an excellent live food for fish fry and small fish. They are tiny nematode worms ranging in size from 1-3 mm in length and roughly 50-100 microns in diameter.

They can live submerged in water for 8 to 12 hours. My worms are cultured in cooked oatmeal with yeast. You will receive 4 ounces of mature culture to use as a starter for your own cultures.

Culturing:

use a small round plastic container with lid, such as a cleaned whip cream, sour cream, or butter tub.

punch 2-4 ¼ inch holes in the lid and plug them with sponge or filter floss (to let some air in but keep bugs out)

add about one inch of instant oatmeal and enough water to just float the oatmeal. (you can use instant potatoes or any starchy cereal, I find oatmeal to have the least unpleasant smell).

microwave for one minute (to sterilize the oatmeal and container, and cooks the oatmeal).

allow to cool to room temperature.

the oatmeal should be soft like jelly, but not runny. Drain water if runny or add more water if too firm.

sprinkle in enough yeast to lightly coat the surface of the oatmeal and add 1-2 tsp of (still good) old culture or starter.

put the lid on it, set it on a shelf that isn’t in the sun, and allow it to grow for 1 week before starting to harvest.

after a few weeks you may need to stir the culture and add a bit more water. at 4-5 weeks use it to start a new culture and discard the old one.

I recommend you keep at least 2 cultures always going, to provide a backup if one goes bad (flies, mold, etc).

Harvesting:

you can harvest every day if you need to.

when the culture matures the worms will crawl up the side of the container.

Harvest them by gently swabbing them off the side (use your finger, a small spatula, etc) and then rinsing the harvested worms off into your fish tanks.
